Regarding the Q&A on Miniature Circuit Breaker

What is the difference between 4.5kA, 6kA, and 10kA breaking capacity?

The breaking capacity is the maximum fault current the MCB can safely interrupt without damage. 4.5kA (HX3) is suitable for residential use where the available fault current is low. 6kA (HX3 higher version, HX2/HX5 option) is common for commercial buildings and the light industry. 10kA (HX2, HX5) is recommended for industrial applications or locations close to the transformer where fault current can be high. Choose based on the calculated short-circuit current at your installation point.

How do I choose between B, C, and D trip curves?

The curve determines at what multiple of rated current the MCB trips magnetically (short-circuit). B curve (3-5 times In) is for resistive loads or long cable runs (e.g., heating, lighting). C curve (5-10 times In) is for moderate inrush loads (e.g., small motors, fluorescent lighting, coils) and is the most common choice. D curve (10-20 times In) is for high inrush loads (e.g., large motors, transformers, welding equipment). Match the curve to your load type to avoid nuisance tripping during startup.

Will a 1P MCB fit into my existing distribution board?

Yes, if your board has standard 18mm per pole spacing. All HX series MCBs (HX1, HX2, HX3, HX5) have a width of 18mm per pole, so 1P = 18mm, 2P = 36mm, 3P = 54mm, 4P = 72mm. They mount on a standard 35mm DIN rail. Measure your board’s rail and available width before ordering.

Does temperature affect the MCB’s tripping characteristics?

Yes. The thermal trip element (bimetal) is temperature-sensitive. At higher ambient temperatures, the MCB trips earlier; at lower temperatures, it trips later. Our HX series datasheet includes a temperature compensation correction table. For example, at 50°C, multiply your load current by 0.80–0.96 to select the correct rating. For hot environments, use a derated MCB or choose a higher current rating.

Can I replace my existing MCB (e.g., Schneider, ABB, Chint) with an HX series MCB?

In most cases, yes, provided three physical conditions are met: same pole configuration (1P, 2P, 3P, 4P), same width (18mm per pole), and same terminal type (pin type, and same cage size for the cable). Electrically, also match rated current (In), trip curve (B/C/D), and ensure breaking capacity is sufficient for your installation.
